Delivering a multifaceted, community-based approach to promoting preventive health requires a highly skilled and knowledgeable health workforce. To build and support that group, Healthy South Texas has developed needs-based training for health professionals, community health workers and extension agents that strengthen public health competencies. Our approach consists of:
- Assessing education and training needs of the Healthy South Texas workforce
- Designing interactive training, building on adult learning principles
- Developing and delivering face-to-face learning experiences to engage the workforce
- Providing tools and problem-solving skills that promote and sustain healthy communities
- Implementing public health education via distance learning modalities and regional in-person workshops
As a result, the program will:
- Increase awareness of public health dimensions of diabetes, asthma and infectious disease
- Increase knowledge and skills of the Healthy South Texas workforce
- Integrate health professionals into Healthy South Texas programs
- Promote networking and coordination among Healthy South Texas partners
A robust Healthy South Texas workforce possessing the right skills and tools can effectively educate communities about how to achieve community health transformation. In the long run, the communities we serve will enjoy reduced complications related to diabetes, asthma and infectious diseases.
