Diabetes Control Program

Finding out you or a loved one has diabetes or pre-diabetes can be overwhelming. As a chronic disease, diabetes does not go away, meaning it must be continually monitored and managed throughout your life. Suddenly, medications, blood glucose monitoring, diet, exercise and perhaps even insulin injections become constant worries. But you don’t have to do it alone.

Texas A&M Healthy South Texas provides continuous, supportive and effective care that allows you to spend more time enjoying life and less time worrying about diabetes.

It’s time to take control of your life. Enroll in our diabetes education program to feel better now and prevent complications down the road.

Enrollment includes:

  • 8-hour class taught in one full day or four weekly sessions
  • Quarterly lab work for one year
  • Continuing education with a health educator for one year

Classes are offered in English and Spanish. Our bilingual, multidisciplinary team is made up of:

  • Medical director
  • Registered nurses
  • Certified diabetes educators
  • Registered dietitians
  • Exercise physiologists
  • Community health workers

Class topics include:

  • What is Diabetes?
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Carbohydrate counting
  • Meal planning
  • How to read food labels
  • Medication and insulin administration
  • Preventing diabetes complications
  • Exercise
